Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is central to the management of acute and chronic back problems.

There are very few problems in the spine where movement is not encouraged but diagnosis through a specialist centre such as The UK Spine Centre ensures that treatment is directed appropriately.

Our in house team of physical therapists specialise in spinal problems. They work closely with our Spine Consultants to tailor make the right program for you.

Understanding your own back problem is also empowering and our physical therapists will reinforce the clear explanation provided by our specialists.

Better Understanding

As our spines age it is normal to develop spinal degeneration. This typically effects the discs and facet joints.

The amount of degeneration is influenced mostly by our genetic/family history and to a lesser extent our lifestyle, occupation and medical history.

Degeneration can lead to abnormal range and patterns of movement which can cause back or neck pain with arm or leg pain (sciatica) if nerves are pinched.

The muscles around the tummy and back (our core) have to work harder as our spines age to support the spine and control excessive or abnormal movements. These muscles become increasingly important as our spine age.

Exercise programs work to stretch and strengthen these vital core muscles.

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis allows us to target core exercises more effectively.

For example, if you have a disc related problem we will focus more on extension based strengthening (Mackenzie type). With facet pain, emphasis is placed on abdominal strengthening.

We give careful consideration to standing and sitting posture in the context of work, hobbies and normal day to day activities.

Our exercise programs are tailored to the individual and we understand that what may help one person may be quite different to another.

Other Treatments

Further treatment possibilities include Yoga, Pilates, massage, gentle spinal manipulation, acupuncture, cognitive and talking therapies.

Our team at The UK Spine Centre has broad experience which enables us to recommend the most effective treatments for both the condition and the individual.
